Republican for Georgia State House, District 9
Doug Sherrill is a pastor, an educator and a small business owner. He and his wife Lori have been married for 25 years and they have four children and they are active in ministry at Lighthouse Baptist Church in Dawsonville. Doug has previously served as Lumpkin County Surveyor and Lumpkin County Commissioner and he remains a go-to contact for other leaders in our district, always having a good pulse of our local issues, needs and interests.
Born in Waynesville, NC, Doug was raised as a southern baptist. His father was a Vietnam Veteran who’s career in fiber optics moved the family to several states during Doug’s childhood. From Texas to Massachusetts, Doug was immersed in very different communities and this shaped his view of our country, pushing him to really own his conservatism at a young age.
Doug was appointed to Boys State in high school where he participated in a mock state legislature program. He also became involved in and recognized for success in debate club and public speaking. Doug graduated from high school in Texas and began taking courses at seminary and community college while working for a land surveyor. He also served as a youth pastor and was ordained as a minister before marrying Lori in 1995 and moving to Dahlonega, GA.
With his parents living in Atlanta, Doug drove to a phone booth on GA-400 and looked up ‘Land Surveyors’ in the phone book to call around for a job. He worked for several businesses to earn enough experience and receive his surveyor license. Then in 2005, he started his own company - Land Development Professionals (LDP).
While building his business from the ground up, Doug grew to a full-service organization with 17 employees. As the recession took a toll on his business, Doug was able to downsize and return to school, enrolling at University of North Georgia. Here, he earned his Bachelors in Political Science and Business, and then completed his Masters in Public Administration as well as additional coursework in International Affairs. He then worked as a lecturer for UNG over the last 2 years as he has now re-grown his surveying business.
Church life and ministry is and always has been an integral part of Doug’s life. At the same time he was building his business and starting a family, Doug was pastoring a church in Dahlonega. He then started Tabernacle Baptist Church where he served as pastor for 15 years.
Doug has been involved in our community not only as a business owner, pastor and active father of four children, but he has also previously served as Lumpkin County Surveyor and Lumpkin County Commissioner. He is a member of Dawson County Chamber, graduate of Leadership Lumpkin and served on a number of boards and charitable organizations. Doug continues to actively serve in ministry and is entrenched in community circles where he serves as a leader and advisor for our local and state officials.
